Starting a New Job: My First Three Weeks at First Person Project!
Wow, what an exciting and eye-opening start to my new journey at First Person Project! It’s hard to believe that just three weeks ago I was stepping into this incredible team, not knowing where I'd fit in, but now I already feel like I’m beginning to get the hang of things. Let me take you through my first few weeks and share what I’ve learned, how I've grown, and why I'm so excited about what’s ahead.
Week 1: Team Development Week
The first week was a bit of a whirlwind, but it was also a fantastic introduction to the team and the incredible work we do. This week was dedicated to team development, where we focused on understanding each other’s strengths, preferences, and how we can work best together. It wasn’t just about learning the usual workplace stuff, but about diving deep into how we, as a team, can collaborate, communicate, and be effective in supporting the community.
During this week, I also learned something incredibly valuable about myself: I am an auditory learner! Up until now I never really thought much about how I best take in information, but as the team engaged in tests, discussions, brainstorming, and sharing knowledge, I realised that I thrive when I can listen and absorb ideas, stories, and experiences from others. It was like a lightbulb moment! I learned that this ability to absorb information through conversation and group discussion will help me grow in my role, and it also showed me how much I can learn from the diverse perspectives of my team members.
The week was all about connection. I could see that the strength of this team lies not only in the work we do but in the way we learn from each other. I feel so lucky to be surrounded by people who bring such unique skills and knowledge to the table. I’ve already picked up so much from them and feel like I'm learning every single day.
Settling Into the Team
As I moved into the second and third weeks, the initial nerves faded, and I started to settle into the rhythm of the team. Everyone here has been so welcoming and supportive, and I quickly realised how much this energy contributes to the positive atmosphere we have. It’s the kind of environment where everyone feels valued, heard, and encouraged to contribute. I can’t tell you how much of a difference this makes, not just for the team but for the people of the community.
I’ve had the opportunity to observe how this team’s energy extends beyond our office. The work they do in the local community is truly inspiring. Whether we’re supporting individuals, engaging in community projects, or facilitating discussions, you can see the tangible impact we’re making. The dedication of my colleagues is contagious, and it’s been motivating to witness how we all contribute to making a positive difference.
The Power of Asset-Based Community Development
As I’ve been settling in, I’ve also started to dive into the principles of Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD), which is at the core of everything we do here at First Person Project. I’ve quickly realised just how powerful this approach is. Instead of focusing on deficits or what’s missing in a community, ABCD encourages us to look at the strengths, skills, and resources that already exist within a community. It’s about empowering people to be part of the solution rather than waiting for others to solve problems for them.
This approach feels so refreshing and empowering. It’s about celebrating what’s strong, not what’s wrong. And I can already see how ABCD is changing the lives of the people we work with, helping them tap into their own strengths and create lasting change. It's something that truly excites me because it’s a positive, sustainable way to support communities, and I’m eager to dive in and contribute to this process.
Excited for What’s Ahead
I’m only three weeks in, but I already feel so much more connected to the mission and vision of First Person Project. The past few weeks have opened my eyes to just how much impact we can produce alongside the local community, and I can’t wait to get even more involved. I’m excited about the opportunities to grow, to learn from the team, and to contribute to the important work we’re doing.
I’ve learned so much in just these first few weeks, but I know there’s so much more to discover. I’m looking forward to continuing this journey, to being part of a team that makes such a difference, and to using the ABCD approach to help create meaningful, lasting change. I feel incredibly lucky to be part of such an inspiring group of people, and I’m so excited about the difference we’re going to make together.
Here’s to many more weeks of growth, learning, and community impact!
